Background

Since mucking about with a Super 8 camera with my brothers at about 9, 10, 11 years old and leaving a cinema theatre having watched “Superman 2″ feeling bolder and more confident (something you cannot forget when you’re the quiet kid with glasses) I’ve always had an interest in how stories are told and, more importantly for me, visually communicated. Sitting in that dark theatre looking up at the bright screen there had been something about the language of how it expressed themes that I related to. Not that I understood how at the time, far from it. My constant drawing and scribbling led me towards training as a Fine Artist. Painting and drawing satisfied my appetite for story telling in the narrative interpretations of paintings, never once making the connection, rather ignorantly, about it’s potential relationship with story telling in the cinema. But, as I did eventually realise, a movie directors’ use of colour, composition, shape, lighting, space, texture are all working on us as an audience, just like they’ve been for hundreds of years in fine art painting and sculpture.
So, as a teacher I remember being very deliberate about promoting ‘visual literacy’ to the students. The understanding that we live in a visually orientated world and that all visual media, whether that’s magazines, advertising, architecture, product design, fashion, gaming, cinema, graphics (to name simply a few) belong to a visual language and that we should have an awareness, a visual literacy, of how that language can be used to influence, inspire, inform etc….essentially communicate to us.
